From Monday, September 26, drivers on the M1 and M621 may experience closures on the roads as work begins which is planned to last until summer 2023.

The work is to replace 3.8km of the central steel barrier with a concrete one as well as to upgrade the lighting to LED on this stretch between Junction 42 (Lofthouse) and junction 43 (Belle Isle). Work will also be taking place on the M621 near junction 7 (Stouton).

According to National Highways, the concrete barrier which will be installed is much stronger than the previous steel barrier and will "significantly reduce the risk of vehicles crossing over from one carriageway to another". This should improve safety and the "duration of incident-related congestion."

They also say the barrier will last twice as long as the metal one and so there will need to be fewer closures in future for repairs.

Once work on the M1 barrier has begun, work will also start on the barrier on the M62 between junctions 29 (Lofthouse) and 28 (Tingley) although the date for this has not yet been confirmed. There will also be some overnight lane and full road closures from September 26 to install traffic management systems to protect the workers.

On Saturday, October 1, work will also commence on the installation of a temporary steel barrier, which means the outside lane of the M1 northbound and southbound between junction 42 and the M621 junction 7 will be shut until the main works are completed. This will be closed every hour of every day and a 50mph speed limit will be put in place in remaining lanes.

The rest of the motorway will also run on narrow lanes. Free recovery will also be in place for the duration of the work.

All this construction will mean delays should be expected for drivers. Drivers should allow additional time on their journeys.
