iTWire - The Getac ZX10 tough tablet gives and gives

If you want a tough tablet - like, really tough, designed for hot, cold, sunlight, rain, day, night - but without compromising on features and security then the Getac ZX10 is for you.

This is a robust, strongly covered, Android tablet that is designed to work as hard as you do. It’s for construction work, remote locations, emergency responders, field service, utilities, transport, logistics, construction, mining, and all kinds of diverse environments where lesser devices would get a real beating.

First things first; the Getac ZX10 is a snappy Android tablet from the get-go. It runs Android 11 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Octa-Core 1.95GHz processor, bursting up to 2.2GHz. It includes options of either 4GB or 6GB LPDDR4 RAM, and storage options of 64GB or 128GB. It has a 10.1” TFT LCD WUXGA 1920x1200 screen, dual SIMs, Bluetooth 5.0, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. There’s an option for 4G LTE mobile, and the dual hot-swappable 4870 mAh batteries can also be upgraded to dual 9470 mAh batteries which support full-day work. It includes 8 and 16-megapixel cameras, and other options include a barcode scanner, an HF RFID/NGC combo reader, and a smart card reader. It includes a USB 2.0 type-A port and a USB 3.2 type-C port.

Now, as a tough tablet, it's wrapped - literally screwed into - a hard shell and can withstand a drop from six feet or 1.8 metres, as well as withstand dust and water to IP66 standards. “IP” is the ingress protection standard, with the first digit being dust protection, and the second being water protection. IP66 means it is protected from total dust ingress despite how dirty and dusty your environment is. It also means it is protected from high-pressure water jets from any direction, but it’s not completely waterproof. Don’t go deep-sea diving with it, for instance.

It's also MIL-STD-810H rated, meaning it's certified for protection against dust, water, vibrations, drops and extreme temperatures, and allows stable and uninterrupted use in different environments.

This protection bumps the total weight to a little over 1kg - 1,040 grams to be precise. It’s still pretty convenient, compact, and portable, and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Importantly, it means you can be fully productive in all kinds of environments.

iTWire readily admits it is not a first responder, nor servicing utilities in the wet and dark, or operating the tablet while driving heavy machinery in extreme temperatures and wet conditions. Well, perhaps there is a little similarity; after all, the unit is designed to withstand bumps and drops from drivers who are hard on their equipment.

Even so, iTWire admired Android's swift deftness and the device’s seriously solid feel. iTWire also appreciated the ZX10 is Android 12 compatible and includes file-based encryption, and a brilliant, sunlight-readable display. The screen is terrific whether you’re inside or outside, working at night or day, and even if you’re down a deep hole. Getac uses LumiBond technology, which uses a clear resin to optically bond the tempered glass, capacitive touch sensor and LCD panel into a single 800 nits panel that is more durable and readable. It supports touch controls and stylus operation, as well as users using gloves.

The dual batteries and dual SIMs mean you can keep working longer between recharges and in areas with differing carrier coverage. The optional RFID, NFC, and barcode readers allow for easy asset management.

Ultimately, it's a tightly-packed unit that has been clearly designed with an expert eye for detail. The laser barcode reader is integrated directly into the tablet; the batteries pop out and in with ease, the webcam has a slidable privacy cover, the cameras record in remarkable quality up to 16 megapixels, and the unit has two microphone arrays for accurate speech recording and for noise reduction, and it also provided enterprise EMM/MDM support for IT departments to provision and manage the device over the air.

Getac says it designed the ZX10 with the needs of people working in all kinds of fields where working conditions can be difficult and where accidents can happen. It is for heavy-duty use in harsh environments, though could certainly serve in many other markets. Getac says their vision was to offer a fully rugged 10” class tablet for Android users that wasn’t cumbersome, but also large enough to offer a good display landscape.

It comes with a three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, that covers damage incurred. It’s a tablet that will last your whole shift and then swap to the night shift without any downtime to recharge. And even then, you can hot-swap the two batteries for fresh ones without powering down.

It brings a range of connectivity options, delivers quality audio and conferencing features, and stands up to the demands of your job without you needing to worry you have to baby it.

What's more, Getac also provides a range of accessories like office and vehicle docks, handles, straps, spare batteries, and multi-bay chargers.

Make no mistake; the Getac ZX10 is a serious tablet for serious users - some of those users might even have your life in their hands someday.
