Multiple sound barriers have been constructed along parts of Interstate 64.
“Those are actually part of the Segment II project,” said Brittany McBride, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

McBride said when VDOT constructs the noise barriers, they work with the localities and received input from Williamsburg, York County and James City County, hence the red walls.
“They wanted a brick finish,” she said.
The walls are built along I-64 between Exit 242, just west of Humelsine/Marquis Center Parkway and Exit 247, east of Yorktown Road, about 7 miles.
The brick-finished walls are about the size of a door.
Speaking of doors, the sound barriers have two.
“That’s just for maintenance,” McBride said, noting public utilities are behind the wall. “It is not unusual for noise barriers of that length to have doors built in that are intended to be used as an access point for emergencies or maintenance to get to the other side without having to travel all the way down and around.”
