The Jayco Terrain Is A New Luxury Adventure Van

There’s a new luxury van on the market called the Jayco Terrain 19Y that is likely to give some serious competition to the current crop of vehicles created to pair rugged adventure with creature comforts.

Jayco is owned by Thor Industries, which also owns Airstream. It’s been around since the late 1960s, a pioneer in those pop-up campers that your parents or grandparents may have owned. They have decades of experience in designing living spaces in trailers and motorhomes. With the new Terrain, they’ve entered the game for luxury vans aimed at millennials and empty nesters seeking high-end vans with off-road capabilities.

Thanks to the pandemic, the demand for such vehicles has been enormous, as Americans continue to hit the open road in search of adventure and breathing space. Some are weekend warriors, while others are in full embrace of the #VanLife movement, looking for a conveyance created for remote work and recreation. What these folks have in common are deep pockets for a vehicle that, in this case, starts at $201,000.

What do you get for that kind of spend? A Class B campervan just shy of 20 feet long with a stylish interior, smart engineering and enough features to get you off the grid, at least for a while. The base vehicle is a solid and highly desirable Mercedes Sprinter 2500 4x4 van that’s been kitted out for going off-road and carrying outdoor gear.

There’s a 3.0L V6 engine with 188HP and 325 ft.-lb. torque to keep you moving. For the expected rough roads ahead, it’s equipped with Koni shock absorbers, a rear sway bar, and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires. On the dash is a Mercedes infotainment system and a 25-inch touchscreen, along with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and blindspot assist.

To tie down a couple of kayaks, skis, a paddleboard or a roof box, there’s a roof rack that’s accessible via a rear-mounted ladder. There’s also a powered drop-down bed at the rear of the vehicle that opens to reveal a gear garage for even more adventure toys: think hiking gear, climbing gear, snowshoes, ski boots and snowboards.

While transporting and storing gear is important, it’s only part of the story. Inside is the kind of upscale interior you’d expect from a Mercedes. Both the cushy and heated front driver and passenger seats can swivel to face the interior of the van. There’s a flip-up table and two additional reclining passenger seats to create a small dining room-like space.

The van's bathroom is located just behind the two passenger seats and contains a shower, a cassette toilet, removable bamboo shelves, a clothing line, and a roof vent. The kitchen is on the opposite wall and features an induction cooktop, a refrigerator, a sink, and a pull-out countertop and pantry. The patio awning, meanwhile, can be deployed for outdoor living and even dining, thanks to a drop-down table. The bedroom is in the rear of the van, a drop-down bed that can be stored in the ceiling when it's not in use.

The Terrain comes with LED lights, an air conditioner, and a heating system. Power is courtesy of a 48V 210AH lithium battery that generates 10.2KW of power, plus 200 watts of solar panels on the roof, designed for off-the-grid living.
